2013 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing Ceremony

As part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology, the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) seeks to recognize high school women with outstanding achievements and aspirations in computing and technology through the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. The C-STM Center is hosting the Northern California Regional Award. The Awards Ceremony is happening on March 30, 2013 in Kemper Hall, one of the Engineering buildings on the UC Davis campus.
Picnic Day Presentation

During UC Davis Picnic Day 2013, the C-STEM Center will be demoing the Mobot to students and families. The demonstration table will be set up outside of Bainer Hall which will be filled with Mobots being demoed by UC Davis and K-12 Students.

The UC Davis C-STEM Day builds public awareness and advocates for C-STEM education. The C-STEM Competitions challenge students in middle and high schools to apply their computing and STEM knowledge in a competitive environment. The competitions include:

- C-STEM Awards for K-12 students

The UC Davis C-STEM Center and its industrial partners have developed an innovative modular robotics technology called Mobot for integrating computing, robotics, and engineering into K-12 math and science education.
SF Bay Area STEAM Colloquium Presentation by Director Harry Cheng

Director Harry Cheng is giving a presentation at the SF Bay Area STEAM Colloquium titled "RoboPlay: Using computing and robotics programs to close the achievement gap in math and science education". See how engaging students in Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (C-STEM) with RoboPlay closes the achievement gap and provides STEM access for all students. Students explore their creativity in writing, art, music, choreography, design, and film making while learning and applying C-STEM concepts for solving practical problems. UC Davis Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education has developed innovative courseware and teaching strategies for readily integration of computing and computer programming in C/C++ into the formal curriculum in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges.

This workshop is to prepare stakeholders in the K-12 educational arena to implement this new engaging, hands-on curriculum in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Technology classes and after school programs. This collaboration will be focused on assessment of the pedagogical impact on student achievement, especially in regards to the new teaching strategy "Dual Programming" which is being pioneered by the C-STEM center.

A workshop on "Counselors for Computing: Professional Development in Emerging Careers"

This workshop on Computing for Counselors is jointly organized by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), California Association of School Counselors, and UC Davis K-14 Outreach Center for Computing and STEM Education (C-STEM). The workshop will prepare school counselors to guide students on studying computing and STEM related subjects with the 21st century skills. Therefore, students will be able to pursue a STEM related careers and post-secondary studies. STEM Teachers from the partner schools of the UC Davis C-STEM Center will present their experience on engaging students from the underrepresented groups, especially female students, on computing. Their students will discuss experiences and inspiration for computing and STEM related post-secondary studies and careers. Students will also showcase their computing, robotics, and STEM activities.

C-STEM Outreach Club members will be holding a workshop at Sacramento State as part of the Expand Your Horizons Event. Club members will be presenting a workshop titled "Programming the Amazing World of Robotics". The 1st Summer Program of the NSF CREST Project

The C-STEM Center will conduct the NSF Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Site project "Computing Research Experiences for STEM Teachers (CREST)". This is the 1st year of the three-year project. Each year, 15 in-service and pre-service STEM teachers will be recruited as CREST Fellows to participate in the project. CREST Fellows start with six-week computing research experiences with faculty mentors and their research groups in the summer with academic year follow-up plan. CREST Fellows will attend the Summer Insitute on Computing and STEM Education in the first two weeks, then spend four weeks to conduct researches with faculty mentors and apply the research results in their classroom teaching. The C-STEM Center provides training and support for CREST Fellows throughout the academic year.
