200% Year-Over-Year Improvement in Meeting or Exceeding State Math Standards

Bridgette M. Barnett, a fourth-grade teacher in the Fontana Unified School District, saw the percentage of her students meeting or exceeding standards increase to 30% after collaborating with the UC Davis C-STEM Center and its programs during the 2022–2023 school year. One year earlier, only 10% of these same students met or exceeded the standards, representing a 200% year-over-year increase. Below is a presentation Ms. Barnett delivered at the 11th Annual C-STEM Conference in 2021.

Persistent Results in Exceeding or Meeting the Standard

3rd grade teachers Monica Reyes and Heather Williams from Oleander Elementary School in Fontana USD had 38% of their 26 students exceeding or meeting the standard, of which 19 students are English language learners in Levels 1 and 2, which is more than double the districtwide average of 17%.

Additionally, Chaparral Elementary implemented the C-STEM K-12 Math and CS curriculum last year schoolwide. Compared to the previous year data from 2022, student math score improvements in 2023 are as follows:

3rd grade

35% gain

4th grade

6.67% gain

5th grade

166.67% gain

Many other school districts have similar results. For example, a 5th Grade teacher from Redlands USD had 82% of her students exceed or meet the state standards, compared to the district average of less than 30%. Many of these school districts are using the C-STEM K-12 Math curriculum as their first instruction.
