C-STEM Girls in Robotics Leadership (GIRL) Camps Empower Girls To Explore STEM
Solano County just launched the first C-STEM Girls Robotics Leadership (GIRL) Camp of 2025. The Vacaville (CA) Reporter, Richard Bammer, reported that Solano Community College’s Vacaville Center hosted the first of three Girls in Robotics Leadership summer camps on Friday, June 13.
The camp, organized by the Solano County Office of Education (SCOE), in partnership with UC Davis C-STEM, aims to empower youths, especially girls, to develop leadership skills and explore STEM fields through hands-on robotics projects. This free, week-long camp gave middle and high school girls hands-on experience in robotics, coding, and leadership.
Using reconfigurable Linkbot robots and Arduino boards, students tackled space-themed challenges while developing technical skills and building confidence. Participants presented projects such as The Spacelets, exploring Uranus, and LAEA, focused on asteroids. Steph Morgado, program manager for STEAM Robotics Educational Services, emphasized the camp’s mission to “make the mission come alive.” Andrea Lemos, SCOE’s deputy superintendent, encouraged students to reflect on their learning.

Highlights included coding workshops, a tour of SCC’s biomanufacturing lab with Professor Jim DeKloe, and a final showcase where campers presented their projects to families and community members.
Camp coach Vera Cho, an Early College student, shared how the program empowers participants to collaborate, grow as leaders, and envision a future in STEM, especially in fields where women are underrepresented.
